The new release from multi-instrumentalist/composer Gregory Reeves, “On a Thin Line (Microtonal Guitar Sketches) is a collection of solo guitar pieces, using a microtonal electric guitar, amp, a few pedals, and tape effects. Minimal and raw.
Thanks to artists like King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, microtonal music has received more mainstream attention recently. “On a Thin Line” is heavily influenced by American Primitive music, as pioneered by John Fahey and others. Reeves combines a rootsy sensibility with the alternate tunings and scales, in a very subtle fashion, referencing American folk, garage, blues, and eastern music.
Reeves also releases experimental electronic music as himself and under various aliases, from generative to ambient, as well as more guitar-based music as Brutal Jooks and Voitcamp(also microtonal). He has worked with other artists including Hanni El Khatib, the Dead Kennedys, Her Space Holiday, James Hardway, Jeff Trott, and many others, and composes for film, TV and multimedia (cordovanmusic.com).
